5 Stones: Turkish Game

Materials: 5 smallish stones.  I think round shapes help.

Normally played with 2 people.  First person to give 100 points (worms) wins.

Round 1: Player drops 5 stones, picks up one stone.  Like jacks, player must toss up the stone in hand and grab another before catching the tossed stone.  Pick up one at a time and don't miss to advance to round 2.  If you miss or drop, turn is over.

Round 2: Player drops 5 stones, picks up one stone. Again like jacks, player must toss up the stone in hand and scoop up two stones and then two more.  Don't miss or drop to advance to round 3.

Round 3: Player drops 5 stones, picks up one stone. Player must toss and pick up 1 and then 3 or 3 and then 1.

Round 4:  Different from jacks.  Player holds four stones in palm of hand, and one between first finger and thumb.  Player must toss the one stone and place the four down quickly (and hopefully altogether) and catch the tossed stone.  Then toss the one again and pick the 4 back up and catch the tossed stone again.

Round 5: Also different.  Hold stones like round 4.  Toss the one up, keep 4 in hand and "peck" the ground with thumb and forefinger, catch the tossed stone.

If you mess up on one of the rounds, you start over on that same round on your next turn.  You do not start back at 1 each time.

Now you go to the GOAL part.
Toss 5 stones, pick up one.  Cross first 2 fingers, spread far apart with thumb and place as a "goal" to knock other rocks through.  Where you place is strategic.  The other player choses which stone has to pass through the goal LAST.  Player gets 3 tosses to try and knock first 3 stones through the goal and the last stone gets one shot.

If you pass the GOAL part, you move to the SCORING.
Hold 5 stones, toss all and try to catch as many on the back of your hand.  If you catch two, you can have either two or 4 points depending on your next choice.  Add: You pop the two back up, turn hand over and catch both again--you give the other player 2 "worms".  Multiply: You pop the two up and grab them like the coaster game at restaurants--you give 4 "worms".  If you had only one stone it would be 1 or 2.  If you had 4, it would be 4 or 8.  (Don't know how that could be possible!)  The goal is give worms to the other player and cancel out any worms you get.

While in the airport, Stephanie and I were given all sorts of cheats and played the baby beginner way, even being allowed to use two hands.  Supposedly a full game only takes about 20 minutes to reach 100 and the kids watch and judge and look for cheating and want to play the winner.  Really it's a "girls'" game, but Mustafa had older sisters who made him play to practice and he seems awfully adept.

These are pictures for 3 stones, 9 stones and 12 stones.  I'll have to look them up.  Apparently this game is universal around the world.....  You just pick some rocks (or joints) and draw lines in the dirt or on a surface with charcoal or chalk.
