NYC June 2015

On Sunday morning, we left our DC hotel and caught a bus to take us to New York City.  The closest any of us had come to visiting here was back in 2000.  Matt spent a horrid 24 hours including spending the night in his rental car after an mess up at his hotel.  So we were all ready to see if this city of dreams could deliver.  It was about a mile to our hotel from where the bus dropped us off, so we just walked.   Honestly, it was much cleaner than I expected, though we saw one rat down on the tracks on the subway once.  That felt like a badge of authenticity.  We were staying a few blocks off Broadway, just inside "Hell's Kitchen".  It did not live up to its nightmarish historical reputation.  It was great, we saw a HUGE ad for Wicked out the window which didn't influence us at all to inquire about tickets. It took a couple tries, but we also found great New York pizza just down the street.

After we checked it, dumped our stuff, and changed into walking clothes, we hit the streets.

Great bagel shop a block away.

Our first view of Times Square was filled with a thousand people doing yoga.

We popped into a couple churches because that's what touring Europe has trained us to do.  New York has a few just as old and many in Europe.

Steam out of the man holes--like the Letterman top ten count down.
A big chunk of Broadway was turned into an outdoor market of sorts.  This table was selling tiny fake food.

Outside Rockefeller Plaza.  We actually hung out inside waiting out a sudden downpour that luckily didn't last long.

On our way to the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty from the water.  We read online that you couldn't currently visit the island because of damage from the last hurricane.  Then we saw people on the island.....

We were bored waiting for the ferry.  Can you guess which feet belong to whom?

The other one going in the opposite direction.

We didn't learn till later why Isaac was always "playing" on his phone.  Turns out he was composing on Garage Band and it was pretty impressive.

Jess really liked Lady Liberty.

NYC Hot Dogs.  Not bad, but we vote for Costco.

Wall Street.  I'm going a little crazy because I'm positive we took pictures of pieces of wood in the street and a marker explaining why "Wall Street" is called Wall Street:  There was actually a wall built by immigrants in the 1600's!!  This area is also where George Washington was sworn in as the 1st President of the United States of America.   There is a statue and another plaque of which I thought I had a family picture near.  Grrr.  I always assumed he was sworn in in Philadelphia.  D.C. was full of obvious history.  New York is, if anything, even more full of it, but sometimes it's less obvious.  HA! I found some on Makenna's phone:

That's not our family.  It's some family.

New York Stock Exchange

This was very somber.  The Twin Towers Memorial.

Makenna's amazing cloud building photos.

This one in inside St. Patrick's Cathedral built in the early 1800's.

We saw Rupert inside!

Kids did NOT want to get up the next morning.

We got mixed up on the subway but got to the park in the end.

There was a concert in the park scheduled that night, but we got to listen to their sound checks/dress rehearsal.  Good deal for us because we were going to Wicked a few hours later.

Cutest geocode ever.

We waited outside and the kids got some autographs!

I took this picture out the window on the way to the airport.  Most unusual Home Depot I've ever seen.  But I guess people need to make home repairs even in this skyscraper jungle.
