Jessica's twelvth birthday was spread over several days. It started on New Year's Eve and continued until the 5th when Matt had a day off and we could have a proper family party. I guess it actually started before the 31st because she had her birthday friend activity/party with Raven earlier in the week.
Later in the day on January 1st:
We started the day off with smoothies, as usual.
Smoothies and French toast was the full menu.
After he finished his toast, Isaac dove into the leftover pizza too. This is his "what?" face.
We were going over to the Keffers' house to continue our 'Dubai New Year's Eve' tradition. I guess it became tradition to keep switching houses too. This is the 3rd. We got there early, the kids played, and Stephanie and I prepped food and chatted. Then about an hour before midnight, THIS comes on the news.
The Address hotel, right next to the Dubai Mall, was completely on fire. We watched evacuations and tried to guess what was going on downtown. Over a million people gather around the Burj Khalifa each year for the fireworks show, and now all those people have to be moved. We wondered what was going to change for the firework show. They had an even more ambitious plan to start the fireworks downtown at midnight, to then snake along the creek, out into the sea, go to the Burj al Arab, then continue in the Marina area as well. Well, they didn't cancel! This is Dubai and the show must go on. It was incredible, yet again. We had a good view from the Keffers' rooftop. We all sang to Jess at midnight.
She and Grace made the cake!
Later in the day on January 1st:
She got a tiny baby spoons, and kept one in her mouth. These are '12th Man' leggings...because she's 12!
Some sort of sibling birthday ritual.
Later, on home the party day, BALLOONS!
Making the Race Cake.
She wanted Isaac to make steak and mom to make mashed potatoes and peas.
This is why Isaac is in charge of the steak. Actually, we have a few chefs in our house who are wonderful with meat.
NEW CLOTHES! Thanks Grandma Chris!
The Many Birthday Faces of Jess
We kept those 12 balloons for a few months. The foil really holds helium well.
