Stephanie found this race online and called me Christmas Day to say we had to do it. And so we did. There were some big group training sessions ahead of time. She and I went to one and did well except for climbing the rope. I failed. Stephanie made it to the top but then ripped big patches of skin off both hands and a leg on the way down. Big bummer because that was my skill in 4th grade. Michele and Jennifer joined us, so we named our little team after our boys' scout troop--our common thread. Go Team Troop 813! Next time we are going to have little capes with our names/super powers on them.
We met up early on February 20th, just as the wind was really starting to pick up. There were hundreds of other racers there separated by heats starting in 15 minute intervals. It was a 5K run through mostly loose sand with 20 obstacles sprinkled throughout. We enjoyed such challenges as climbing under 100 meters of barbed wire, climbing a rope, throwing a javelin into a straw dummy, carry bags of sand/bucket of rocks up and down a hill, splash through mud, flip over/drag big tires and climbing over walls--to name the ones that come to mind just now. If you fail a challenge, you get to do 30 burpees before continuing. I did 60 burpees. We didn't really race (run between all obstacles), but chose to stay together. Here are some glory shots of us at the end. There was soreness the next day.

When I got home, the kids helped spray me off in the backyard before going in the house. The wind got worse as the day went on and by Saturday, the worst sandstorm in our time here was raging. It was bad enough to catch international attention.
