Another mom in our homeschool group arranged for a group of us to get a tour at a local news station. When we first arrived, the weatherman, Kevin Jamison, showed the kids the green screen and how it works and let them take turns trying it out. This is Isaac trying to point to Washington State and Washington DC. All the kids found it was trickier than it looked. He would also put a green cloth over part of them so it would look like they were a floating head or a headless body on the screen.
When it was time for the real news to start, we were allowed to stay in the room and watch the cameramen and newscasters at work. There is a lot more down time for them than I would have thought. They were constantly cutting to a pre-recorded piece or commercial. Every time they weren't on camera they would chat with each other or let us ask questions. The guy was a BYU grad which got cheers from our LDS group, but his co-anchor says her school in the mid-west is known as a much better journalism school. They were all smiles, all the time.
Then we went to the production room. That's where the real action is going on. Producers do a lot more than I ever thought. There is no down time in there. We saw the news room and sound rooms too, but they weren't really picture worthy--just a lot of desks and cubicles. Isaac was really into it and had a bunch of good questions. We were there on December 7th, so they had a Pearl Harbor piece that he appreciated, having just done a report on it. Makenna liked it too, but Jess was bored by the end. Age appropriate. We hardly ever have the news on at home, but we have turned it on a few times since to see the anchors we met and our nice tour guide weatherman.
