Turkey Pictures: Project Day

Day 5 October 7
Breakfast and headed out by 10. We went about 10km up the mountain to Murat's mother's house. We spent about 2.5 hours rebuilding a stone wall. Had lunch and sat with Murat's mother for tea (chai). Then we walked to the amphitheater and explored around. The local ladies tried to sell us scarves and spoons and keychains. Today was a very beautiful day in the mountains. Came back to camp. Kids played around camp. Cops and robbers. Dinner was served around 7. Fish caught fresh from the lake, pasta, “not- rice”, bread, pickled cabbage, salad. Then we watched the videos and slide show of our trip so far from Mustafa's GoPro. We finished the day with our usual evening meeting.

This man from Latvia, I believe, was leaving that day.  He spoke a little English but enjoyed hanging with our youthful group.  He was traveling via bicycle.

mmmmmm.

We left in the morning to drive up higher into the mountains.

The little village had helped this grandma and adult son rebuild their house after a fire.  We were helping rebuild some sections of wall.  They live upstairs and the area below acts as a barn for the goats.

Just outside we met our first lady selling trinkets.  Jess happily purchased an evil eye keychain, which she loves, at 5 times the going rate in town.  We were clueless tourists at the time.  Mustafa set us straight, but it is hard to feel bad knowing the surplus goes to the village people.

Getting a bit of a history lesson about ancient Romans of the area.

This was the the mill until quite recently.

Roman grave of someone of significance.  It had a fence around it, but time and animals have not been kind.

Walking through the village we saw a family juicing their grapes.  There were several enormous vats of juice ready to cook down.  (You can see a couple in the background.)  They make it into syrup to use throughout the year.

Our scouts thought this boy was having great fun, but I bet he would have happily traded places.  It was rather a prince and the pauper moment.

Goat skin, heavily salted to keep the bugs off, curing.

A before picture of one wall section.

Nearly finished.

Lunch

The sweet grandma brought out THE BEST grapes, water, and equipment to make tea.

Mustafa had Isaac help serve.

They have to fence certain trees to keep out the goats.

The little girls ate quickly and ran off to climb rocks.

Can you see the theater remains in the background?  This was our view as we worked.  Wow.

The girls helped carry stuff for the grandma.

Back to the house.

YUMMY grapes!

Adorable granny selling trinkets.

We walked across the valley to the theater.

That's Jess and Aleaha to give an idea of the size of this thing.

The village

Watch out for these suckers.  They hurt and will stab right through your gloves.

Aleaha looked like she could have been a sister.

The nightly meal.  Salad, "not rice, noodles, beans and tomatoes, red cabbage, seasoned onions, fish/chicken/goat (lamb), bread.
