Christmas Eve 2010

Jess had plenty of energy to burn off all day; she was so excited.  This was one of her activities: super hero jumps with a parachute that never quite fully inflated.

In the evening, we made cookies for Santa.  The kids painted half and frosted and sprinkled the other half. For anyone who hasn't heard of this, try it.  It's awesome.  You mix a drop of food coloring with an egg yolk and paint directly on the raw, cut out cookies.  We usually sprinkle a bit of granulated sugar on top before baking, but it's not needed.  Then bake, as directed.  The cookies come out beautiful and glossy.  With skinny paint brushes, budding artists can create intricate, lovely designs.  And they taste great--just like unfrosted sugar cookies.

Christmas Eve dinner.  We cooked another Thanksgiving turkey breast.  It was lovely, but too filling considering all the other treats in the house.

This warmed my heart.  I discovered Jess separating the sprinkles and decorating cookies dot by dot.  Was she watching me from heaven that one summer when I was 13 and spent all night with my cousin Kate doing just that in crazy detail?

Jess did the one that spelled "santa" too.

This is the kids' set up for the night in Isaac's room.  Jess was so excited, but determined to be in bed on time, lest Santa skip us.  It brought back memories of her little self being over anxious about being awake when a largely unknown stranger was going to be intruding in her domain.  When she was almost 3, she was almost in tears at the suggestion to stay up and play a little longer.  She's not scared now, but she wasn't about to dawdle.
