Makenna LOVED this science lesson in her day and so did Jess this year. I remember soaking white carnations in colored water and watching the petals change color over a couple of days, but this is a step beyond.
Take wilted celery and stick them in colored water.
Wait several hours.
Notice the leaves are tinged with color at the edges and in the veins.
Now slice a chunk off the bottom. See the colored dots?
Peel the celery apart at the dots and you can follow the colored tube all the way up.
What are those water tubes/celery straws called? Xylem! All vascular plants have them, but they are easily seen in celery.
Very cool. Celery will never be eaten the same by Jess again. Now, both girls eat it like string cheese trying to pull out the xylem whether it's colored or not (usually not).
